Carving History

Relates to [ General ][ Outdoor Education ]

The Carving History programme started in January. This Heritage Lottery funded project which is a partnership between the County Council Archaeology Service and the Centre is an attempt to build on the work we have already being doing with young people to enable them to research and explore their Celtic and Anglo-Saxon heritage (many will have already visited the Anglo-Saxon hall), coupled with our training work in stone sculpture skills as part of the Entry to Employment programme.

After much planning and preparation the idea emerged to transport seven huge standing stones to the site (some weighing over nine tons) and to use these as the focus of the stone sculpture work. The stone duly arrived again on cue just in time for the summer solstice and were duly positioned ready for the carving work to start. An Open Day was held on 29th. July to celebrate what has been achieved so far, and the thank the various partners who have contributed to the project. It is hoped to complete the work by December so watch this space for further information about another open day in January 2005.
